1954-D Doubled Die Obverse WDDO-002

Description

Cross-referenced as CONECA 2-O-V and Coppercoins 1954D-1DO-002, WDDO-002 of the 1954-D Lincoln wheat cent displays a Class V counterclockwise spread from a pivot at approximately 7:00, with doubling visible on TRUST. Class V pivoted hub doubling occurs when the hub rotates slightly between impressions, producing spread that increases with distance from the pivot point. Since the pivot sits at about 7:00, the greatest displacement appears on design elements farthest from that location. Obverse die markers include a strong die gouge at the rim just left of the designer's initials and three parallel die scratches running WNW to ESE between the tops of T and R in TRUST. The reverse shows die pitting above the U in UNITED. The CONECA 2-O-V designation identifies this as the second cataloged obverse variety of the Class V type for this date and mint. The 1954-D was produced at the Denver Mint during the final years of the wheat reverse design, and Class V pivoted doubling provides an instructive example of the rotational hub misalignment mechanism.
