1953-S Repunched Mintmark RPM-003

Description

RPM-003 documents a S/S Counterclockwise rotated repunched mintmark on the 1953-S Roosevelt Dime — a directional designation indicating the initial S punch was applied with a rotational offset in the counterclockwise direction before being corrected to the standard orientation. Catalogued UVC-250 and DMR-006 across three die stages: Stage A (early die state); Stage B (mid die state); Stage C (late die state), which shows numerous north-south oriented die scratches on the reverse and a late die state obverse. The Stage C north-south die scratches on the reverse are a distinctive late-stage marker, reflecting die polishing or surface abrasion from extended use. The 1953-S Roosevelt Dime was struck in 90% silver — 90% silver, 10% copper — at the San Francisco Mint under John R. Sinnock's design. Rotated repunched mintmarks differ from directional (north, south, east, west) repunches in that the secondary impression shows angular displacement rather than simple linear offset, producing a visible rotational ghost of the S punch at the counterclockwise position relative to the final mintmark.
