1953-S Doubled Die Reverse DDR-001
Error
Description
First documented doubled die reverse for the 1953 San Francisco Mint Roosevelt Dime, DDR-001 shows a medium spread and extra thickness across multiple reverse design elements including UNITED STATES OF AMERICA, ONE DIME, E PLURIBUS UNUM, and both stems of the torch and olive branch. Cross-referenced as UVC-249 and DMR-005, this variety has been documented across three die stages: Stage A at early die state is unconfirmed, Stage B shows both reverse and obverse in mid-die state, and Stage C shows reverse and obverse in late die state. The medium spread affecting the full complement of reverse inscriptions and botanical elements indicates substantial hub misalignment during die production, creating doubling visible under moderate magnification. The 1953-S Roosevelt Dime was struck at the San Francisco Mint in 90% silver composition, part of the post-war era that would prove to be the final chapter of silver circulating coinage before the Coinage Act of 1965 mandated clad composition. John R. Sinnock's Roosevelt design had been in production since 1946, and the San Francisco Mint served as an important secondary production facility for circulating dimes during this period.
