1953-S Repunched Mintmark WRPM-009

Description

San Francisco Mint Jefferson Nickels from the early 1950s frequently display repunched mintmarks from the era of hand-applied mint letters, and WRPM-009 preserves an S punched over S with southward displacement. Both obverse and reverse carry detailed die markers that aid attribution. On the obverse, a small die gouge appears below the right side of the E in LIBERTY. The reverse provides even richer diagnostic evidence: a die gouge sits above the right roof of Monticello, additional die gouges mark the upper right side of the building north of the right arch, and die scratches run in a WSW to ENE direction between the second S of STATES and the O in OF. The abundance of die markers on both sides makes WRPM-009 one of the more confidently attributable repunched mintmarks for the 1953-S date, as collectors can verify multiple independent diagnostics beyond the mintmark itself. Before 1990, each working die received its mintmark individually by hand punch, and any imprecision in placement created the overlapping letter impressions that variety collectors seek on coins from this production era.
