Description

Sole cud error documented for the 1953 San Francisco Jefferson Nickel, cross-referenced as JNC-53-1 in the Jefferson Nickel Club attribution system and cataloged by Cuds on Coins as of September 2013. A major die break at the rim caused a section of the die to fracture completely and separate, resulting in a raised, featureless mass at the coin's edge where planchet metal filled the void during striking. San Francisco's 1953 nickel production totaled approximately 19.2 million pieces — relatively modest compared to Philadelphia's output that year — which means fewer dies were consumed and consequently fewer opportunities for rim failure existed. That only one cud has been documented for this date-mint combination aligns with the lower production volume. The JNC cross-reference provides collectors with a secondary identification pathway through the Jefferson Nickel Club's independent cataloging framework. Cuds on San Francisco nickels from the early 1950s are scarce in the marketplace, as the smaller mintage limits the surviving population of any die-specific variety.
