1953-S Repunched Mintmark WRPM-008

Description

Cataloged by the Wexler Team as 1953-S 5¢ WRPM-008, this San Francisco Jefferson Nickel has no known external cross-references. Obverse die markers include a small die gouge to the right of the upper L in LIBERTY. Reverse markers: a die gouge between the lower E and P in E PLURIBUS UNUM, and a die gouge to the right of the right steps of Monticello. These three die gouges across both faces provide multiple attribution points for confirming this die pairing. The Monticello steps area is closely scrutinized by collectors because full-step specimens command premiums, and nearby die gouges can affect that assessment. Schlag's design was struck in 75% copper and 25% nickel at 5.0 grams and 21.21 mm. Repunched S mintmarks from the 1950s document the manual punch process used at the Philadelphia die shop for all San Francisco working dies.
