1953-S Repunched Mintmark RPM-006

Description

San Francisco Mint production of 1953 Jefferson Nickels included several documented repunched mintmark varieties, and RPM-006 is cataloged by VarietyVista under UVC-551 and DMR-007. The mintmark displacement is S/S West, with the primary S positioned slightly east of the earlier ghost impression. Stages A and B are currently unconfirmed. Stage C (LDS) is the best-documented state, marked by vertical die gouges visible above the right roof of Monticello and die scratches oriented north from the ribbon on the reverse — a combination of markers that can be checked directly against the architectural details of the building. The die gouges above the roof roofline and the scratch pattern near the ribbon are reliable late-stage diagnostics when Stage A and B examples are unavailable for comparison. The 1953-S Jefferson Nickel was produced in moderate quantities at San Francisco; the copper-nickel composition of this post-wartime era returns the familiar dark luster and sharp design transfer associated with standard nickel coinage. Collectors hunting RPM-006 should focus on confirming both the S/S West mintmark displacement and the Stage C reverse markers before submitting for attribution.
