1953-S Repunched Mintmark RPM-005

Description

Cataloged by VarietyVista under internal tracking code UVC-391 and die marriage reference DMR-006, this 1953-S Jefferson Nickel exhibits an S/S East repunched mintmark where the initial S punch was positioned slightly to the west of its final corrected location, leaving the remnant of the first impression visible to the east (right) of the primary S. Die stage documentation records three states: Stage A at early die state (unconfirmed), Stage B at mid-die-state (unconfirmed), and Stage C where both reverse and obverse reach late die state. The confirmed LDS for both dies in Stage C indicates this die pair was used extensively through its full service life, and collectors should note that late die state specimens may show the repunched mintmark with less clarity due to progressive die wear smoothing the overlapping S impressions. The Jefferson Nickel was designed by Felix Schlag and struck at the San Francisco Mint in 1953, composed of 75% copper and 25% nickel at 5.00 grams with a 21.21 mm diameter.
