1953-S Repunched Mintmark RPM-004

Description

An S/S East variety from the San Francisco Mint, this 1953-S Jefferson Nickel RPM-004 was documented by VarietyVista with notable early die state markers. Die markers UVC-390 / DMR-005: Stage A with a die gouge under A of STATES and a light diagonal die scratch above right balcony at EDS, with obverse at EDS; Stage B with reverse and obverse at MDS; Stage C with reverse and obverse at LDS. The die gouge under STATES and the diagonal scratch above Monticello's balcony provide specific early-state reverse attribution points. Composed of 75% copper and 25% nickel at 5.0 grams and 21.21 mm, Felix Schlag's design was struck at the San Francisco Mint in 1953. The eastward displacement means the initial S was placed slightly west of its intended position before the corrective second punch established the final location to the right of Monticello.
