1953-S Repunched Mintmark RPM-001

Description

Catalogued UVC-387 and DMR-002, this S/S West repunched mintmark on the 1953-S Jefferson Nickel is documented across three die stages that together capture the variety's full die progression. Stage A is the early die state of the reverse, accompanied by a die gouge east of the upper knot as an early die state obverse marker — a detail that provides an obverse diagnostic independent of the mintmark itself. Stage B is the mid die state. Stage C is the late die state. The S/S West direction indicates the initial S punch was applied too far west before being repositioned eastward to the accepted location, leaving a displaced secondary S impression to the left of the primary. The 1953-S Jefferson Nickel was struck in 75% copper, 25% nickel at the San Francisco Mint under Felix Schlag's design. West-direction repunched mintmarks are among the more common directional classes in the hand-punching era, and the Stage A die gouge east of the upper knot allows early-state examples to be confirmed with a two-point diagnostic — mintmark repositioning plus obverse die marker — rather than mintmark evidence alone.
