1953 Doubled Die Obverse WDDO-001

Description

Bearing the distinction of being the earliest Wexler-cataloged doubled die obverse for the 1953 Proof Franklin Half Dollar, WDDO-001 displays a very close spread toward the rim on LIBERTY. Proof dies undergo their own hubbing sequence, and any misalignment between hub impressions creates doubling just as on circulation dies — but the proof coin's polished fields and frosted devices render even subtle doubling more discernible. Heavy vertical die scratches on the lower front of the bust, south of the 1 in the date, serve as secondary attribution markers confirming the specific working die. These scratches, likely introduced during die polishing, transferred as raised vertical lines on every proof struck from this die. Sinnock's Franklin Half Dollar was in its sixth year of production, with Philadelphia producing proof sets for collectors. The 1953 proof was struck in 90% silver at 30.6mm on specially prepared polished planchets.
