1953-D Doubled Die Obverse WDDO-007
Error
Description
Submitted by Daniel Sas, this 1953 Denver Lincoln Wheat Cent WDDO-007 is the seventh doubled die obverse cataloged by the Wexler Team for the date. The doubling manifests in one of the most anatomically specific locations on Lincoln's portrait: an extra eyelid appearing southeast of the normal eyelid. This secondary impression, displaced below and to the right, creates a doubled eye where two overlapping eyelid curves are visible under magnification. The eyelid region represents a fine design element where even small hub displacements produce identifiable doubling. Catalog notes indicate better examples are needed for thorough examination, suggesting currently documented specimens show the doubling at less than optimal clarity and that higher-grade or earlier-die-state examples would permit more definitive study. The 1953-D was struck at Denver during the final decade of the Wheat Ear reverse before the Memorial design replaced it in 1959. Cataloged under Wexler Variety ID 1953-D 1-cent WDDO-007, no additional cross-references are currently known. Die Markers: Obverse: A die scratch runs ESE from the upper nose. Reverse: A horizontal die scratch runs below the S in PLURIBUS. Obverse: A die gouge can be found to the right of the bottom of the D in GOD. A short die scratch runs WSW from the 1st T in TRUST. Reverse: A die scratch runs NNE from the center of the diagonal bar of the N in ONE. A die scratch runs NNE from the bottom right of the E in ONE.
