1952-S Doubled Die Obverse DDO-001

Description

Resulting from a misalignment during the die hubbing process, this VarietyVista-documented 1952-S Lincoln Wheat Cent displays visible doubling on the obverse design elements where successive hub impressions failed to register precisely. Specimens needed for new color photos and die stage information. Die markers UVC-1810 / DMR-028 track three stages: Stage A at EDS (unconfirmed); Stage B with obverse and reverse at MDS; Stage C at LDS (unconfirmed). As the primary DDO listing for the 1952-S date, this variety was struck at the San Francisco Mint in 95% copper and 5% tin-zinc at 3.11 grams and 19.05 mm. Doubled die obverse errors on San Francisco Wheat Cents from the early 1950s are noteworthy because the relatively modest mintage compared to Philadelphia limits the total surviving population of any given die variety.
