Description

Sixth in the Wexler catalog of repunched mintmarks for 1952-S Jefferson Nickels, WRPM-006 documents a hand-punched S mintmark variety from the San Francisco Mint. During this era, each working die received its mintmark individually, and the 1952-S nickel production generated enough volume to produce multiple cataloged RPM varieties. Detailed die markers on both sides support attribution. On the obverse, north-south die scratches appear in front of Jefferson's profile, along with north-south and north-northwest to south-southeast scratches behind the head. The reverse carries distinctive diagnostics: north-south die scratches on the right side of the right arch of Monticello, matching scratches on the right side of the left arch, and a north-northeast to south-southwest die scratch between the first O and the N of MONTICELLO. This scratch pattern across five locations provides high-confidence identification. Attributed by the Wexler Team with the variety designation 1952-S 5¢ WRPM-006, this variety rewards careful examination of both the mintmark zone and the broader die marker landscape.
