Description

Second in the Wexler doubled die obverse catalog for 1952 Lincoln Wheat Cents, WDDO-002 presents its primary diagnostic as an extra eyelid found under the normal eyelid on Lincoln's portrait. The eyelid is among the most reliable diagnostic zones for doubled die obverse detection on Lincoln Cents because the delicate curved line clearly reveals secondary hub impressions, even when the spread is modest. On the obverse, a small die gouge is present below the E in LIBERTY, serving as a useful die marker that can help confirm attribution independently of the doubling. The reverse provides additional diagnostics: a short die scratch runs southwest from the underside of the top of the C in CENT, and numerous die scratches running mostly north to south are present throughout the reverse field. This abundance of reverse scratches suggests the reverse die may have undergone polishing or cleaning that left directional marks across the die surface. The 1952 Lincoln Wheat Cent was produced at Philadelphia, and the absence of a mint mark combined with the Philadelphia strike origin places this variety in the standard business-strike category. Attributed by the Wexler Team under the variety designation 1952 1 cent WDDO-002, collectors should examine the eyelid area under magnification for the secondary impression and verify the die gouge below the E in LIBERTY.
