1952-D Repunched Mintmark WRPM-004

Description

Fourth documented repunched mintmark for the 1952 Denver Mint Jefferson Nickel, this variety shows the overlapping D mintmark impressions that resulted from the hand-punching process used to apply mintmarks to individual working dies. Cross-referenced as CONECA RPM #3 — note that the CONECA and Wexler numbering sequences differ, which is common when independent cataloging systems track the same varieties — and listed under Wexler Variety ID: 1952-D 5¢ WRPM-004, attributed by the Wexler Team. The 1952-D Jefferson Nickel was struck during a period of robust Denver Mint production, with over 30 million nickels produced that year for the D-mint alone. Felix Schlag's original design, winner of the 1938 competition to replace the Buffalo Nickel, was in its fourteenth year of production by 1952. The hand-punched D mintmark sits on the reverse to the right of Monticello, a position that remained constant throughout the original design's long run. Four documented RPM varieties for a single date indicates a moderate level of mintmark punch anomalies, consistent with Denver's production volume and the inherent variability in manual punch placement.
