1952-D Repunched Mintmark WRPM-002
Error
Description
Identified as Wexler Variety ID: 1952-D 5¢ WRPM-002 with photography by Brian Ribar, this Denver Jefferson Nickel displays a repunched mintmark from the Eisenhower era. Denver served as a high-volume production facility during the early 1950s, supplying circulating coinage alongside Philadelphia as commerce expanded. The D mintmark was hand-punched into each working die at the Philadelphia die shop before shipment to Denver for use in the coining presses. This centralized die preparation meant that all mintmark punching variations originated in Philadelphia, regardless of which branch mint struck the coins. WRPM-002 denotes the second cataloged RPM for the 1952-D nickel, indicating at least two working dies carried visible repunching from that year's production. The collecting appeal of early 1950s Jefferson Nickel RPMs lies partly in their historical context — these coins circulated during a transformative period in American life, and surviving examples in collectible condition reward patient searching. Ribar's photograph documents the overlap geometry, allowing collectors to distinguish WRPM-002 from the other known RPM on this date.
