1951-S Repunched Mintmark RPM-004

Description

Attributed by VarietyVista as UVC-218, DMR-005, this 1951 San Francisco Mint Roosevelt Dime exhibits a repunched mintmark where traces of the original S punch position are visible alongside the final placement. Three die stages have been recorded: Stage A (early die state), Stage B (mid-die state), and Stage C (late die state). As the fourth cataloged RPM for the 1951-S date, RPM-004 demonstrates the frequency with which repunching occurred during hand-application of mintmarks at the San Francisco facility. Each working die required its own individually placed S, and the cumulative number of RPM varieties for a single date-mint combination reflects both the volume of dies produced and the inherent imprecision of manual punch placement. The three-stage progression allows collectors to assess where their specimen falls in the production life of this particular die pair. Struck in 90% silver (0.900 fine), pre-1965 Roosevelt Dimes by John R. Sinnock carry both numismatic and precious metal value. RPM-004 adds another documented die to the growing catalog of early San Francisco Roosevelt Dime varieties.
