1951-S Repunched Mintmark RPM-005

Description

The 1951-S Jefferson nickel RPM-005 documents a repunched mint mark on a postwar Felix Schlag design issue, struck in the standard 75% copper, 25% nickel alloy that replaced the wartime 35% silver composition after 1945. VarietyVista tracks this variety as UVC-379 and DMR-006. The cross-references record an S over S West repunch — the initial S was set slightly to the west before the corrected punch was applied. Stage A (early die state) carries two die scratches running north-to-south through the last A of AMERICA on the reverse and several north-to-south die scratches on the obverse. Stage B (middle die state) shows both obverse and reverse progressing into MDS. Stage C (late die state, unconfirmed) represents end of die life. Collectors should look for the secondary S impression displaced to the west under low-to-moderate magnification. The Stage A scratches through the last A of AMERICA are visible without specialized optics once a collector knows where to look, making this a practical cherry-pick in bulk lots of postwar Jefferson nickels.
