1951-S Repunched Mintmark RPM-003

Description

The 1951-S Jefferson nickel RPM-003 is catalogued by VarietyVista under UVC-377 and DMR-004, with repunching direction S/S East. Die stage documentation: Stage A shows die scratches on the reverse at early die state with the obverse at late middle die state; Stage B shows the reverse at middle die state and obverse at late die state; Stage C shows the reverse at late die state with the obverse at very late die state. By 1951, Jefferson nickels had returned to the standard 75% copper/25% nickel composition, with the small S at the right of Monticello replacing the wartime large-S placement above the building. San Francisco mintage for 1951 nickels was approximately 7.8 million pieces — a comparatively scarce date within the series, which heightens collector interest in attributable varieties such as RPM-003. The eastward secondary mintmark impression is the primary diagnostic, most clearly visible under ten to twenty power magnification.
