Description
Holding the second catalog position for the 1951-S date, this Jefferson Nickel RPM was documented by VarietyVista with die markers UVC-376 / DMR-003 across three stages: Stage A with reverse and obverse at EDS; Stage B at MDS featuring a strong die scratch Northeast through the F of OF and the obverse at MDS; Stage C at LDS (unconfirmed). The strong die scratch through the F of OF at MDS provides a distinctive mid-life identification marker. Composed of 75% copper and 25% nickel at 5.0 grams and 21.21 mm, the San Francisco Mint's nickel production in 1951 was modest compared to Philadelphia and Denver, making RPM varieties from this facility scarce in absolute numbers. Schlag's Monticello reverse was in its 14th year of service.
