1951 Doubled Die Obverse DDO-002
Error
Description
Documented under VarietyVista catalog UVC-0749 (DMR-006) and also referenced as ODV-005, DDO-002 of the 1951 Washington Quarter exhibits a medium spread on LIBERTY with lighter doubling on the date, ribbon end of Washington's queue, and IN GOD WE TRUST. The die stage progression tells a compelling story: Stage A represents early die state (unconfirmed), Stage B at mid die state shows a die crack developing across Washington's hair, and by Stage C at confirmed late die state, the crack extends onto Washington's forehead while a separate crack runs from the eagle's right wing to Q of QUARTER on the reverse. This progressive cracking provides collectors with a built-in timeline of the die's working life. The concentration of doubling across multiple obverse elements — from LIBERTY through the fine ribbon end on Washington's ponytail — indicates a significant hub doubling event. John Flanagan's design was in its nineteenth production year in 1951. The confirmed LDS notation for Stage C, combined with the dramatic crack extending onto Washington's forehead, makes advanced-stage examples particularly desirable to collectors who appreciate visible die progression.
