1951-D Repunched Mintmark RPM-005

Description

Cataloged under UVC-0920 and DMR-013 by VarietyVista, this 1951-D Washington silver quarter shows a D/D repunched mintmark to the south. The obverse pairs with ODV-006, the Thin Motto variety, adding a secondary diagnostic. Three die states are documented, though Stages A and B remain unconfirmed. Stage C in late die state reveals extensive deterioration: a die crack runs down the eagle's right wing on the viewer's left, another crosses the upper hair, and a third traverses the bust. These progressive cracks provide strong confirmation once the repunched D is identified. Repunched mintmarks on Washington silver quarters from the early 1950s resulted from hand-punching at branch mints, where slight misalignment required a corrective second impression. The southward displacement of the first D beneath the final position is best observed under moderate magnification. The Thin Motto obverse pairing narrows attribution to a specific die combination.
