Description

Cataloged by the Wexler Team as 1951-D 1-cent WDDO-006, this Class V doubled die obverse on the Denver Mint Lincoln Wheat Cent shows pivoted hub doubling on the lower letters of LIBERTY. Class V doubling occurs when the working hub is slightly rotated between impressions, producing a pattern where the offset increases with distance from the pivot point. On LIBERTY, this means the lower letters — typically T and Y — show the most pronounced doubling while upper letters may show little or none. Victor David Brenner's Lincoln portrait, introduced in 1909, places LIBERTY vertically along the left obverse, providing a convenient gauge for the progressive spread that characterizes Class V varieties. The 1951-D was struck during the final decade of the wheat ears reverse design, replaced by Frank Gasparro's Lincoln Memorial in 1959. No cross-references are known beyond the Wexler designation.
