Description

Reported by James Wiles, DDO-001 on the 1950 Philadelphia Franklin Half Dollar shows strong spread on both the date and LIBERTY — a dual-area doubling that makes it the most prominent DDO for this date. Strong spread across two separate design elements indicates substantial hub misalignment during die manufacture. John R. Sinnock's Franklin Half Dollar, introduced in 1948 as the first circulating U.S. coin depicting a non-president, places LIBERTY above Franklin's head and the date at lower right, meaning hub displacement affecting both areas implies a large offset or rotation. This variety is paired with reverse die variety RDV-001b for complete attribution. The 1950 half dollar was struck in 90% silver at 12.5 grams. As DDO-001 it holds the primary catalog position for the date, and the strong dual-area spread positions it as the key variety for Franklin Half Dollar doubled die collectors. The reverse features the Liberty Bell, with the crack required to show for the coveted Full Bell Lines designation.
