Description
Obverse Stage A: Die Markers: Obverse Stage A: Faded die scratches run NNW-SSE on the neck area, NW of the bowtie. A strong die gouge (dot) shows below the lower left side of the mint mark. A die dot shows in front of the lower bust South of the 1 in the date. A light die crack is starting to form on the central bust behind the upper lapel. Obverse Stage B: A long die crack runs North from the hair through the central right side of the W in WE to the rim. The die crack on the central bust behind the upper lapel is stronger. A long die crack runs South on the front of the bust to the rim just behind the first shoulder fold. Two strong die gouges (dots) show on Lincoln’s face, one SW of the back of the nostril and one at the back of the chin. The Stage B die dot below the 1 in the date is still present. A light N-S die crack shows in the hair below the W in WE. Reverse Stage A: Numerous N-S die scratches cover almost the entire area of the central reverse. A strong die gouge runs NE from the upper right side of the R in PLURIBUS to the rim. Distinctive scratch patterns show inside the E in CENT, the D in UNITED and the O in OF. Reverse Stage B: Most of the Stage B die scratches are faded but still present. The die gouge from the R in PLURIBUS is present, but weak. A well-hidden die gouge runs West from the uppermost wheat kernel in the left wheat stalk.
