Description

Exhibiting an S/S/S West, West triple-punched mintmark, this VarietyVista-documented 1950-S Lincoln Wheat Cent from the San Francisco Mint shows three distinct S applications. Die markers UVC-350 / DMR-011: Stage A at VEDS (unconfirmed); Stage B with strong secondary mintmark at EDS, die scratches north-south through LIBERTY, die clash at throat and behind head, and reverse at EDS; Stage C with die scratches north-south through date and LIBERTY at EMDS, die clash abraded away, and reverse at EMDS; Stage D at MDS (unconfirmed); Stage E with weak secondary mintmark at LDS, obverse die scratches worn away, and reverse at LDS. The progressive fading of die scratches from strong through weak, combined with the abraded-away die clash, documents die maintenance during active production. Composed of 95% copper and 5% tin-zinc at 3.11 grams and 19.05 mm, the San Francisco Mint produced approximately 118.5 million cents in 1950.
