1950-S Repunched Mintmark RPM-003
Error
Description
Documented by VarietyVista, this San Francisco Mint 1950-S Lincoln Wheat Cent RPM-003 exhibits a clean four-stage attenuation with distinctive V-shaped die scratches west of the mintmark. Die markers UVC-343 / DMR-004: Stage A with strong secondary mintmark at EDS, V-shaped die scratches west of mintmark, two parallel die scratches northwest between 1 and 9 of date, and reverse at EDS; Stage B with medium secondary mintmark at MDS, V-shaped die scratches worn away, and reverse at MDS; Stage C with weak secondary mintmark at LDS, parallel die scratches almost worn away, and reverse at LDS; Stage D with very weak secondary mintmark at VLDS, parallel die scratches barely visible, and reverse at VLDS. The correlated fading of the V-shaped scratches, parallel scratches, and secondary mintmark across all four stages provides a textbook demonstration of how surface attrition affects multiple die features simultaneously. Struck in 95% copper and 5% tin-zinc at 3.11 grams and 19.05 mm.
