1950 Doubled Die Reverse DDR-001

Description

Among the most robust doubled die reverse varieties documented for the Proof Franklin Half Dollar series, DDR-001 of 1950 shows strong spread on E PLURIBUS UNUM, the left side of the bell yoke, and the bottom of the eagle, with extra thickness across most reverse lettering. A distinctive technical note accompanies this die: the first hubbing was weak, producing only the central design elements, with subsequent hubbings adding full relief — the sequential hubbing mismatch created the conditions for visible doubling. Die markers UVC-028 and DMR-004 identify this die. The reverse also carries the designation RDV-001b. Stage A is confirmed as Early Die State on the reverse, with the obverse cross-listed as paired DDO-002 in EDS. Stages B and C remain unconfirmed. Proof Franklin Half Dollars from 1950 saw approximately 51,386 proof sets produced, and the high-polish proof die surfaces allow doubling to register with exceptional clarity. The obverse of this die is paired with the DDO-002 die, connecting these two varieties for collectors who track obverse-reverse die pairings.
