Description

Third in the reverse doubled die census for the 1950 Jefferson nickel, DDR-003 stands out for its documentation across an unusually large number of die pairings: VarietyVista assigned six separate UVC/DMR identifier pairs — UVC-856/DMR-005, UVC-857/DMR-006, and UVC-858/DMR-007 — indicating this reverse die was mated with at least three different obverse dies during its production life, each pairing receiving independent documentation. The medium spread affects E PLURIBUS UNUM, STATES OF AMERICA, CENTS, and the last O of MONTICELLO on Felix Schlag's architectural reverse, with the doubling intensity increasing from left to right across the reverse face. This left-to-right gradient mirrors the inverse of the pattern seen on some other Jefferson nickel DDRs and indicates the hub misalignment produced progressively greater displacement toward the right side of the die. Philadelphia struck approximately 9.85 million nickels in 1950, a low mintage year for the series that makes the 1950-P among the more valuable circulation-strike Jefferson nickels. The multiple die pairings documented under DDR-003 illuminate an important aspect of Mint production: reverse dies were not permanently married to specific obverse dies but were separated and repaired with new partners as individual dies wore out at different rates, and tracking these successive pairings through the UVC/DMR system provides a production chronology for the die. The O of MONTICELLO — the last letter in the building's name — sits at the lower right of the reverse where the increasing left-to-right doubling gradient reaches its maximum effect, making this letter the strongest diagnostic point. Collectors should begin examination at MONTICELLO's O under 10-15x magnification for the most pronounced doubling, then work leftward through CENTS, STATES OF AMERICA, and E PLURIBUS UNUM to observe the gradient diminishing toward the left periphery.
