1950 Doubled Die Reverse DDR-005

Description

Documented by VarietyVista, the 1950 DDR-005 Jefferson Nickel displays medium spread on STATES OF AMERICA, FIVE CENTS, and ELLO of MONTICELLO, accompanied by rotational spread on E PLURIBUS UNUM — a complex doubling pattern combining linear displacement on some design elements with a rotational component on others, suggesting the hub contact involved both a translational shift and a slight angular tilt. Die markers UVC-860 / DMR-009 track three stages: Stage A at EDS featuring a die scratch running southeast from the right roof above the right short window on the reverse, with the obverse also at EDS; Stage B with both reverse and obverse at MDS; and Stage C at LDS (unconfirmed). The die scratch on the Monticello roof in Stage A provides an early-state identification marker independent of the doubling itself, aiding rapid die identification. The combination of medium spread and rotational spread on a single die indicates a hub displacement event that was not purely linear or purely rotational but involved a compound motion — the hub both shifted position and tilted slightly during one of the impression contacts, creating different spread characteristics in different areas of the die depending on their distance from the rotation axis. The Jefferson Nickel was designed by Felix Schlag and struck at the Philadelphia Mint in 1950, composed of 75% copper and 25% nickel, weighing 5.0 grams with a diameter of 21.21 mm. The 1950-P had a mintage of approximately 9.8 million pieces — notably the lowest Philadelphia mintage of the Jefferson Nickel series — making die varieties from this date inherently scarcer in absolute terms than those from higher-production years.
