1950 Doubled Die Reverse WDDR-004
ErrorDescription
Cataloged as Wexler Variety ID 1950 WDDR-004 Proof, this 1950 Philadelphia Mint proof Jefferson Nickel exhibits Class II Distorted Hub Doubling. Nice Class II doubling shows on E PLURIBUS UNUM and UNITED STATES OF AMERICA, with both spreads increasing from left to right. Doubling also shows on FIVE CENTS, LLO of MONTICELLO, and the right side of the building. Tripling is visible on UNUM. Expert attribution by Whaden Curtis. On the obverse, a die dot appears to the right of Jefferson's eye, with three die gouges on the necktie below the chin. On the reverse, a slanted die gouge extends from the rim between and above B and the second U of PLURIBUS. Struck in 75% copper and 25% nickel as a proof issue at the Philadelphia Mint, the 1950 Jefferson Nickel proof was produced for collectors in the annual proof set. The increasing left-to-right spread on the reverse lettering, combined with the tripling on UNUM, makes WDDR-004 one of the more visually dramatic doubled die varieties among proof Jefferson Nickels of this era.
