Description

Ninth in the documented sequence of doubled die obverses for the 1950 Denver Mint Lincoln Wheat Cent, WDDO-009 preserves a hub misalignment that occurred during the die production process and transferred visible doubling onto the obverse design. When the hub is not perfectly registered on successive impressions into the die blank, the resulting working die carries a doubled image — and every coin struck from it inherits that doubling. The 1950-D was produced in substantial quantity at the Denver Mint during the early post-war economic expansion, struck in the traditional bronze composition of 95% copper with 5% tin and zinc. Victor David Brenner's obverse portrait of Abraham Lincoln, in continuous use since 1909, remained the standard design alongside the wheat ears reverse.
