1950-D Doubled Die Obverse WDDO-006

Description

Cataloged by the Wexler Team as 1950-D 1-cent WDDO-006, this Lincoln Wheat Cent doubled die obverse shows an extra eyelid just under the normal eyelid on Lincoln's portrait, a subtle but diagnostically significant feature. The Lincoln Wheat Cent, designed by Victor David Brenner (obverse) with the wheat stalks reverse, was struck at the Denver Mint in 95% copper and 5% tin and zinc at 3.11 grams and 19.05 mm diameter. No other cross-references are known beyond the Wexler designation. The extra eyelid diagnostic is a hallmark of hub doubling affecting the fine facial details of Lincoln's portrait, where a slight shift between hub impressions created a secondary line parallel to the eyelid. Obverse die markers include a die scratch running NNE from the top right of the T in LIBERTY, plus die pitting below and between the 5 and 0 in the date, along with several other die scratches throughout the obverse field. On the reverse, die scratches run from WNW to ESE and from NW to SE through the upper portion of the first U in PLURIBUS. The 1950-D had a mintage of 334,950,000 pieces, making it a common date but the doubled die variety itself requires dedicated searching through rolls to locate.
