1950-D Doubled Die Obverse WDDO-003

Description

An extra eyelid visible above Lincoln`s normal eyelid provides the primary diagnostic for this 1950-D Lincoln Wheat Cent doubled die obverse — one of the more anatomically specific doubling targets in the series. Attributed by the Wexler Team as 1950-D 1-cent WDDO-003, the doubled eyelid results from a secondary hub impression that displaced portrait detail around the eye, creating a raised line mimicking a second eyelid above the first. On the obverse, a die scratch running northwest to southeast to the right of the upper Y in LIBERTY provides a confirmation marker independent of the doubling. The reverse carries its own diagnostics: die gouges inside the upper N of ONE, die pitting to the right of the T in CENT, and short vertical die scratches above the left side of the U in UNITED. This constellation of markers creates a thorough identification framework — collectors can confirm the correct die pair from either side before focusing on the eyelid doubling. Denver`s 1950 Wheat Cent production came in the late years of the series, eight years before the Memorial reverse replaced the wheat ears in 1959, placing WDDO-003 among the later Wheat Cent doubled die varieties.
