Description

Recorded by VarietyVista with an S/S West displacement, this San Francisco Jefferson Nickel from 1949 has the initial S mintmark placed east of the intended position with a corrective westward second punch. Die markers: UVC-373, DMR-004. Stage A: EDS (unconfirmed). Stage B: Reverse is MDS; diagonal die scratch inside upper B of LIBERTY — MDS. Stage C: LDS (unconfirmed). The diagonal scratch within LIBERTY's B provides a secondary diagnostic for this die pair. Felix Schlag's design was struck at the San Francisco Mint in 75% copper, 25% nickel (5.0 g, 21.21 mm). The 1949-S had approximately 11.9 million pieces, with each die receiving its S mintmark through manual punch application at Philadelphia before shipment west.
