1949-S Doubled Die Reverse WDDR-001
ErrorDescription
Attributed by Brian A. Ribar, the 1949-S WDDR-001 Jefferson Nickel is the first documented doubled die reverse for this San Francisco Mint date — notably the last year S-mint Jefferson Nickels were produced until the series resumed at San Francisco with the 1954-S. This Class II distorted hub doubling variety shows very close doubling on E Pluribus Unum, seen best on UNUM. The obverse carries a die gouge on Jefferson's collar and a distinctive wavy die gouge above the top of his head, while the reverse displays heavy die scratches through and above the small right window of Monticello along with die scratches above the left arch. The wavy die gouge above Jefferson's head provides an especially memorable die marker for cherrypickers seeking this variety in circulation finds or dealer inventory.
