1949-D Repunched Mintmark RPM-002

Description

Second repunched mintmark cataloged by VarietyVista for the 1949 Denver Washington Quarter, RPM-002 displays a D/D/D/D West displacement with serifs — a remarkable four-punch mintmark where at least four overlapping D impressions were applied, each shifted progressively westward. Serif remnants from earlier punches remain visible alongside the final impression. Documented under UVC-0691 and DMR-006, die stages progress from early through late die state with structural failures accumulating: cracks from US of PLURIBUS extending to the wing, a circular crack through the bust, and another through the hair. These progressive cracks trace the die's deterioration. The 1949-D was struck in 90% silver at Denver, where each die received its mintmark through hand-punching. Four overlapping punches represents an unusually high count, suggesting the die setter was dissatisfied with multiple placements before achieving an acceptable position. The combination of quadruple repunching and extensive die cracking makes this a multi-feature variety with both mintmark and structural diagnostics.
