1949-D Repunched Mintmark RPM-001

Description

Documented by VarietyVista, the 1949-D RPM-001 Roosevelt Silver Dime shows a D/D/D triple-punched mintmark with the secondary and tertiary impressions rotated clockwise from the primary — indicating the Denver mintmark punch was applied three separate times, each at a slightly different rotational angle, creating overlapping D impressions that fan outward at their extremities. This triple repunch is notably more complex than the common two-punch RPM varieties. Die markers UVC-185 / DMR-002 document three progressive stages: Stage A at EDS (unconfirmed); Stage B at MDS (unconfirmed); and Stage C at LDS featuring a die crack running from the portrait frame to the rim at the K-12:00 position along with a die chip on the nose. The die crack at the 12:00 position combined with the nose die chip in Stage C indicates significant structural deterioration in the obverse die, with fracture lines extending from the high-relief portrait features outward to the die's edge. The Roosevelt Dime was designed by John R. Sinnock and struck at the Denver Mint in 1949, composed of 90% silver and 10% copper, weighing 2.50 grams with a diameter of 17.9 mm. The D/D/D rotated clockwise pattern is diagnostically distinctive because the three separate punch impressions create a more complex overlap pattern than standard two-impression RPMs, with portions of each D visible at different points around the letter's curves. Collectors examining this variety should focus on the interior curves of the D where the three rotational offsets produce the most visible separation between the primary and secondary punch remnants.
