1949-D Doubled Die Obverse WDDO-001
ErrorDescription
Identifiable by an extra eyelid directly below Lincoln's normal eyelid, the 1949-D WDDO-001 wheat cent presents one of the more visually distinctive doubled die diagnostics in the series. The secondary eyelid arises from a slight hub misalignment during the die-sinking process, duplicating the fine engraved detail of the eye area. Obverse die markers include a die gouge below the Y in LIBERTY, confirming attribution to this specific working die. On the reverse, a die scratch arcs from the rim, passing between the R and I in PLURIBUS and extending to the top left of the N in ONE, while a second die scratch runs north-northwest to south-southeast inside the upper portion of the N in CENT. Cataloged by the Wexler Team under Wexler Variety ID 1949-D 1¢ WDDO-001, no other cross-references are currently known. Doubled die varieties affecting Lincoln's facial features attract particular collector interest because the portrait's fine detail amplifies even slight hub shifts into recognizable anomalies.
