1949-D Repunched Mintmark WRPM-008

Description

Submitted by Brian Ribar, this 1949 Denver Jefferson Nickel WRPM-008 presents a D/D Tilted or Rotated displacement — the second mintmark punch applied at a different rotational angle, creating overlapping elements that diverge angularly rather than along a simple directional axis. The Wexler Team catalogs this variety with no known cross-references under Wexler Variety ID 1949-D 5-cent WRPM-008. Extensive die markers on both obverse and reverse provide multiple supplementary confirmation points beyond the primary repunching. Tilted or rotated RPMs represent a less common displacement category than standard directional shifts, requiring the die setter to rotate the steel letter punch between applications. The 1949-D Jefferson Nickel was struck at Denver during the post-war era, when each working die received its D mintmark through individual hand-punching — a steel letter punch positioned against the die face and struck with a hammer.
