Description

Carrying the attribution Wexler Variety ID: 1949-D 5¢ WRPM-005, this Denver Jefferson Nickel features a repunched mintmark captured in a photograph by Brian Ribar. Denver's die shop in the late 1940s prepared working dies for one of the nation's two active branch mints, and the D mintmark was applied to each die individually using a hand-held punch. The 1949-D nickel was produced during the early Cold War period, when American coinage demand remained strong. Five cataloged RPM varieties for this date indicate that Denver's die preparation generated a meaningful number of repunching instances. Repunched mintmarks occur in varying orientations — north, south, east, west, or tilted — depending on how the punch shifted between impressions. Each orientation creates a distinct diagnostic profile used to differentiate one RPM from another on the same date. Felix Schlag's design pairing of Jefferson's portrait with Monticello served the series throughout this era. Ribar's photographic work on Jefferson Nickel RPMs has contributed substantially to the visual record, enabling collectors to authenticate varieties with confidence.
