1949-D Repunched Mintmark RPM-004

Description

In contrast to the clockwise rotation on RPM-001 and RPM-003, this 1949-D Jefferson Nickel RPM-004 exhibits a D/D Rotated Counterclockwise displacement — the opposite direction from the other rotational varieties for the date. This counterclockwise orientation provides immediate diagnostic separation. Cataloged by VarietyVista with codes UVC-369 and DMR-005, struck at Denver in 75% copper and 25% nickel. Die progression spans four states: obverse EDS, reverse EDS, MDS, and LDS. Four documented RPMs for the 1949-D — two clockwise, one directional, and one counterclockwise — reveal the range of misalignment possibilities in hand-punching. Each die required individual D positioning, and the sinker's orientation varied enough to produce rotational errors in both directions. Schlag's Jefferson Nickel was well established by 1949, but the manual mintmark process ensured continued variety production.
