1949-D Repunched Mintmark RPM-002

Description

RPM-002 on the 1949-D Jefferson Nickel is a D/D South repunched mintmark variety, the second catalogued repunched mintmark in the VarietyVista sequence for this date and mint, catalogued under die pair UVC-367, DMR-003. The secondary mintmark impression is displaced to the south, the most straightforward repunch direction in the VAR classification system — the ghost impression of the first D punch appears below the final mintmark position. Die state documentation spans three stages: Stage A is Early Die State, currently unconfirmed; Stage B is Middle Die State, also unconfirmed; Stage C is confirmed to exist. The 1949-D Jefferson Nickel was struck in the standard 75% copper, 25% nickel alloy at the Denver Mint, with the mintmark applied to the right of Monticello on the reverse — the traditional placement used from 1938 through 1964 and from 1968 onward.
