1949-D Repunched Mintmark RPM-001

Description

Primary repunched mintmark for the 1949-D Jefferson Nickel, RPM-001 displays a D/D Rotated Clockwise displacement — the secondary impression turned clockwise from the primary position. Cataloged by VarietyVista with codes UVC-366 and DMR-002, this rotational variety carries the strongest visible displacement for the date. Struck in 75% copper and 25% nickel at Denver, the 1949-D comes from a year of moderate postwar production. Die progression spans three stages: Stage A (EDS), Stage B (MDS), and Stage C with obverse and reverse in LDS. Rotational RPMs result when the punch was oriented at a different angle between initial and corrective blows, producing overlap along a rotational axis rather than a linear shift. The clockwise rotation separates RPM-001 from RPM-003, which also shows clockwise rotation — the two are distinguished by degree and precise geometry of angular displacement. Schlag's Jefferson Nickel was in its eleventh year at Denver.
