Description
Cross-referenced as FS-501, this Denver Mint Jefferson Nickel exhibits a D/S North over mintmark where a D was punched over an underlying S, indicating a die originally prepared for San Francisco was reassigned to Denver. Die markers UVC-370 / DMR-006: Stage A with a die gouge northeast above the mintmark at EDS, die gouges northeast along the top right roof, and obverse at EDS; Stage B with reverse and obverse at MDS; Stage C with reverse and obverse at LDS. The die gouge constellation above the mintmark and along the roofline provides multiple early-die-state attribution points. Struck in 75% copper and 25% nickel at 5.0 grams and 21.21 mm, the 1949-D Jefferson Nickel had a mintage of approximately 36.5 million pieces. FS-501.
