1948 Doubled Die Obverse WDDO-002

Description

Attributed by the Wexler Team, this 1948 Washington Quarter carries a close clockwise spread from a pivot at approximately 3:00, primarily affecting IN GOD WE TRUST. The pivot-based doubling is characteristic of rotational hub doubling, where the hub turns slightly between impressions during die manufacture. Struck in 90% silver at the Philadelphia Mint, this postwar quarter comes from the final era of circulating silver coinage before the Coinage Act of 1965. The obverse die shows a pattern of circular die scratches right of the bust running into the queue — likely from die maintenance with a rotary polishing tool. On the reverse, a strong die gouge extends southwest from the lower first T in STATES, short die gouges project west from the upper left of R in AMERICA, a short die gouge extends east from the bottom of I in AMERICA, and circular die scratches appear throughout the eagle, mirroring the polishing evidence on the obverse. John Flanagan's Washington portrait was in its sixteenth year of production on this dollar denomination.
