1948 Doubled Die Reverse DDR-005

Description

Appearing on the inaugural year of the Franklin Half Dollar series, this 1948 DDR-005 exhibits light spread in the northwest direction on E PLURIBUS UNUM and the flanking dots. The Franklin Half, designed by John R. Sinnock, replaced the Walking Liberty Half Dollar beginning in 1948 and continued through 1963, when the Kennedy Half Dollar succeeded it. First-year issues hold particular appeal for variety collectors, as they mark the intersection of a new design with the die production learning curve at the Mint. Three die stages are documented under catalog codes UVC-006 and DMR-006. Stages A and B at early and mid-die state remain unconfirmed, suggesting documented specimens are relatively scarce in those conditions. Stage C is confirmed with both the reverse and obverse in late die state, indicating most surviving examples come from the die's final production window. This 90% silver Philadelphia Mint half dollar was struck during the series' debut year.
