Description
Cataloged by MadDieClashes as TDC-50c-1948-01 and listed in the Cherrypickers' Guide as FS-50-1948-401, this 1948-P Franklin Half Dollar die clash is fondly known among collectors as the "Bugs Bunny" variety — a nickname derived from the obverse clash mark that manifests as a vertical line beneath Benjamin Franklin's nose, creating the visual impression of protruding buck teeth reminiscent of the cartoon character. The clash mechanism is straightforward: the obverse and reverse dies struck each other without an intervening planchet, transferring design elements from each die into the opposing die face. On the obverse, the vertical line below Franklin's nose is actually a transferred impression from a vertical element of the reverse design — likely the division between wing feathers or a structural line of the heraldic eagle — that was pressed into the obverse die face during the clash event. The reverse clash mark appears as a 90-degree angle visible beneath the eagle's right wing, representing the transferred contour of Franklin's profile or bust truncation from the obverse die. This die clash carries an R-8 rarity rating, indicating extreme scarcity with perhaps only a handful of confirmed survivors, making it one of the most elusive die clash varieties in the Franklin Half Dollar series. John R. Sinnock designed the Franklin Half Dollar, which was struck from 1948 through 1963 in 90% silver at 12.5 grams. As the inaugural year of the series, 1948-P Franklin Half Dollars hold first-year-of-issue significance, and the Bugs Bunny clash has become one of the most recognized and sought-after varieties from the entire denomination run.
