1948-D Repunched Mintmark WRPM-028

Description

Die life at the United States Mint varied depending on denomination and production pressures, and the working dies used for 1948-D Lincoln Wheat Cents would have struck tens of thousands to over a hundred thousand coins before replacement — each one carrying the repunched mint mark of WRPM-028 into circulation. The Wexler Team attributed this variety under Wexler Variety ID 1948-D 1¢ WRPM-028, recording a die on which the D mint mark was punched at least twice with detectable positional variance. Because an RPM is created during die preparation rather than during striking, every coin produced from that die shares identical repunching characteristics, making the variety consistent across all surviving specimens regardless of die state. Early die state examples will show the repunching most clearly, while late die state coins may exhibit die wear, flow lines, or deterioration that partially obscures the secondary impression. The 1948-D cent's large mintage ensures survivors exist across the full spectrum of die states, giving collectors the opportunity to study how die wear interacts with RPM visibility.
